Iterating on Light and Dark

About KaizenScuro

KaizenScuro is a melding of two terms: “kaizen” (Japanese for “iterative improvement”), and “chiaroscuro” (Italian for the “study of light and dark”). This term, kaizenscuro, represents a philosophy for me about how I manage my life - iteratively managing the shifts between light and dark, good and bad, in manageable pieces. This blog is everything about a life evolving through contrasts.

KaizenScuro is something I think I can explain to basically anyone, but is one of those things that at first glance people will think I’m nuts about.

Think about this:

Life is full of massive changes.  A quick hit-list:

  • Changing jobs or job roles
  • Committing to a significant other
  • Moving in with that significant other
  • Having children
  • Changes in familial dynamics
  • Death of friends or family
  • Changing social circles and friend dynamics

Etceteras, etceteras.  The point is, each of these on their own can be tricky.  When you combine multiple scenarios, it can seem unmanageable.  Especially if you try to deal with everything in its entirety.

Much like tackling problems in software development, though, tackling life’s challenges can be thought of as an iterative process rather than dealing with the monolithic.  Monolithic resolutions (or ways of dealing with things) are rife with failure because of the time and risk involved.  Instead, you tackle changes in the direction of your life incrementally and gauge your progress.  From there, you can reorient yourself again without as much risk as the monolithic change to the self.

Life is filled with dichotomies - good and bad, light and dark, funny or sad.  We iterate through all of these in life, and constantly readjust ourselves to the dualistic changes that occur in our day to day lives.

That process is what KaizenScuro is about.
